I Think. I Heard.
I Think. I Heard. is an album of what I have dubbed “Blind Duets”.
The concept emerged from my lessons with David Tronzo, who would begin playing a song or chord progression the moment I picked up my guitar—no warning, no discussion. I had to dive in, responding instantly and intuitively.
That experience taught me to approach improvisation without hesitation, without fear, and with complete presence.
I adapted that approach using a loop pedal and no effects—just a borrowed guitar and amp, videoed straight onto my phone—while back in the UK, helping to care for my father during his final illness.
During that time, I recorded six raw, unplanned duets – responding immediately to an improvised loop.
Back in New Zealand, I completed the project by recording six more, together with another four pieces with an extra recorded live loop.
The entire work is inevitably coloured by the emotional weight of my Dad’s decline, and shaped by the need to turn that into something meaningful - a kind of improvised tribute. As you might expect, given the process, it’s an uncompromising listen, with moments of raw beauty, ugliness and realisations of surprise.
You can experience the album as it was recorded HERE in this YouTube playlist.
